THE GREATER WELLSVILLE TROUT DERBY
The Greater Wellsville Trout Derby is a annual fund raising event sponsored by
the
Wellsville Lions Club Charities Inc. During the last full weekend in April
between 2,000 and 3,000 people come to Wellsville from as far away as Florida
and Texas to fish for over $25,000 in prize money. The
Lions Charities Club
goes to a hatchery and buys around 450 fish. Those fish are tagged with
numbers from 1 to 450. When a person catches a tagged fish he/she knows
that they have won some money. The lower the number on the tag the bigger
the prize. In the
2007 Trout Derby the prize money ranged from $25 to $5,565
for a tagged fish.

In 2006 we added some golf carts to help transport people to and from HQ.
Look at the photos to see the carts.

In 2004 we added the
Community Fish.  The total value of the Community Fish
is determined by selling chances at one dollar a chance. When the fish is
caught the individual who caught the fish gets 1/2 of the value. He or she then
draws one of the tickets from the group and the individual who's ticket was
drawn gets the other half of the total value of the fish. If the fish is not caught at
the end of the Derby we will draw one of the tickets and the individual drawn will
get one half of the value of the fish.
